Professor AJIT KUMAR SINGH (b.1944) is a reputed economist and social scientists of the country. He obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Lucknow, Lucknow. He also holds a PG Diploma in National and International Development from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands. He has nearly forty years research and teaching experience. He was a faculty member in the Department of Economics, Lucknow University, Lucknow from 1965 till 1985. Later he joined Avadh University, Faizabad as the Head of the Department of Economics and Rural Development and Dean Faculty of Arts. In 1987 he moved to the Giri Institute of Development Studies as professor. Presently he is Director of the Institute.
Professor Singh has been a member of various working groups and committees of the government at the state and central level including Taxation and Resource Mobilisation Committee, Government of U.P. (1995) and Second State Finance Commission, U.P. (2001-02). He has written extensively on different aspects of planning and development with particular focus on the state of U.P. He has also guided a large number of research projects for national and international organizations. He has authored many books, which include Patterns of Regional Development (Sterling, New Delhi, 1981); Economic Development and Inequalities in China (Himalaya Publishing House, Bombay, 1984); Rural Poverty and Agricultural Development (Ashish Publishing House, 1987); Land Use, Environment and Economic Growth in India (MD Publications, new Delhi, 1997); Uttar Pradesh Development Report 2000 (New Royal Book Co., Lucknow, 2000); and Socio-Economic Conditions of the Farming Communities in Northern India (New Royal Book Co., Lucknow, 2000). In addition, he has edited two books: Economic Planning and Policy in India (Sterling, New Delhi 1984) and Planning Strategy for a Developing Region (Print House, Lucknow, 1990).

Dr. D. M. DIWAKAR (b. 1956), Professor, holds Post Graduate and Ph.D. degrees in Economics. He has been recipient of many scholarship and awards including U.K-ODA Technical Co-operation Training on Applied Social Sciences Fellowship, Post-Doctoral Fellowship, ICSSR, New Delhi. He has over two decades of research experience in the area of social science research. His area of specialisation is agrarian transformation and rural development. He has published over 50 research papers and articles and completed several research projects on contemporary policy issues sponsored by Planning Commission, Ministry of Rural Development, ICSSR, UNDP and the World Bank. He has organised more than a dozen of seminars, workshop and training course on various contemporary issues of social and economic relevance. His publications include: Agriculture and Industry: Dynamics of Imbalances in India (Manak Publications, New Delhi, 1991); Emerging Agrarian Relations in India (Manak Publications, New Delhi, 2000); Land Reforms and Human Development, (Co-author G. P. Mishra, Manak Publications, New Delhi, 2005). He has also edited two books: Distributive Justice through Social Mobilization (Manak Publications, New Delhi, 1998) and India: A Semi Feudal Semi-Colonial State (Manak Publications, New Delhi, 1994). DR. S. S. A. JAFRI (b. 1950), Senior Fellow, holds the degrees of M.A. in geogrphay from Aligarh Muslim University and M.Phil and Ph.D. from CSRD, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has worked in different capacities with Census of India, North Esatern Hill University and Centre for Urban Development and Environment, Lucknow University before joining the Institute in 1986. He was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography, Egerton University, Kenya during 19990-93. his areas of Rural and Urban Geography, Social Geography, Regional Development, Environment and Ecology. He has to his credit more than 45 papers published in reputed journals and books. He has conducted a large number of research projects sponsored by different agencies.

DR. ASHUTOSH JOSHI (b 1948), Senior Fellow, obtained his Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Lucknow (1970) and Ph.D. in Economics from the Kumaon University, Nainital (1987). He has around 30 years of research experience. He has been working in the field of industrial economics, regional development and issues related to education. He has also visited France under Indo-French Cultural Exchange Programme to work on Competitiveness of Exports: A Comparative Study of Firms Between India and France. He has over 30 years of research experience. He has completed several projects sponsored by different organizations. His field of specialization and interest is international economics and urban economics. He has around fifty research papers to his credit. DR. YOGENDRA PAL SINGH (b: 1949), Fellow, obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Work in 1980 from Lucknow University, Lucknow. He has around 30 years of research experience. His areas of specialization include education, health and social welfare. He has been associated with about two dozen field based research studies and has an equal number of articles and working papers to his credit. DR. G. S. MEHTA (b.1954), Fellow, holds M.A. in economics from Kanpur University and Ph.D. in Economics from Kumaon University, Nainital. Prior to joining this Institute in 1977, he had worked with the Department of Economics, Bombay University and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad as a research staff. He visited the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal in 1996 on a short term research assignment. His areas of interest have been rural development, economics of education and planning for development of mountain areas. He has worked extensively on different aspects of the economy of Uttaranchal. He has completed two dozen project reports and contributed around 60 articles published in various reputed journals and books. He has authored eight books. His major works include: Education, Employment and Earnings, 1990; Development Planning and Options in Uttarakhand, 1997; Non-Farm Economy and Rural Development, 2003.


FAHIMUDDIN

Dr Fahimuddin, Fellow, (b. 1953) did his M.A. (Economics) from Lucknow University and PhD (Economics) from Kanpur University. He also holds Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications. His area of research includes agricultural development and marketing, education studies and Panchayati Raj Institutions and Decentralisation. He has published a number of research papers in reputed journals besides working papers and monographs. He has completed a large number of research projects for various organizations. He has authored three books: State Regulations in Agricultural Marketing; Nutritional Support to Primary Education and Modernization of Muslim Education In India. Dr. Fahimuddin was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research for a study visit to China and by the UNESCO to participate in an International Seminar on Higher Education at Tehran.

Dr. B.K. BAJPAI (b. 1956), Senior Fellow, holds Post Graduate and Ph.D. degrees in Economics. He has around 30 years of research experience. He has been working in the field of agricultural economics, industrial economics, environmental economics and issues relating to health, education and poverty. He has participated in international seminars abroad and delivered lectures in Auston University, Birmingham, U.K. He has contributed about three dozen research papers in academic journals and edited books. He has five books to his credit. He has presented many research papers in national and international seminars and conferences. He has directed several research projects sponsored by reputed institutions and government departments. He has held the position of the director of Jhujhunwala Business School, Faizabad, U.P. for 2 years during 2004 and 2006.


Dr. B.N. Prasad

Dr. B.N. PRASAD (b.1963), Senior Fellow, obtained his M.A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. degrees from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prior to joining the Institute, he has over 10 years of teaching experience in Govt. P.G. Colleges of Rajasthan. He has over one and a half decades of research experience in the area of social science research. His areas of specialization include Political Sociology, Rural Sociology and Social Movements. He has published over 10 articles in different journals. His Phd.D. thesis has been published as a book under the title Radicalism and Violence in Agrarian Structure: The Maoist Movement in Bihar (Manak Publications, New Delhi 2002). He has participated and presented research papers in several national and international seminars and conferences.

He has worked on cost benefit analysis of large dams and their environmental impact and economic analysis of land degradation, management and related issues. Professor T.S. Papola a reputed development economist with four decades of experience in teaching, research and advisory assignments. He specialises in the areas of labour and employment, development planning, industrial economics, regional development and enterprise development. He has taught at the Universities of Lucknow and Bombay, Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), and University of Cambridge, UK. He was Director, Giri Institute of Development Studis, Lucknow for ten years (1977-1987) and an Advisor with Planning Commission, Government of India for eight years (1987-1995). He worked as Head, Mountain Enterprise and Infrastructure Division at International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu for six and half years (19996-2002) where he was responsible for developing and carrying out a programme of studies and documentation, consultation and advisory services in enterprise development in the mountain areas of Bhutan, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan. He was also Director, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, New Delhi. Dr. Papola is also President, Indian Society of Labour Economics. He was also the President of the Indian Economic Association during 2005-2006. He has been Chairman/Member of several State and national level bodies including Chairman of U.P Taxation Enquiry Committee (1983-84), Member, State Planning Board, U.P.(1980-86) and Member, Indian Council for Social Science Research, New Delhi (1982-1988). Currently, he is a Member of the National Commission on Emterprises in Unorganised Sector, appointed by Govt. of India. He has worked in consultative and advisory capacities with international organisations such as ILO, UNCTAD, UNIDO, UNICEF and UNDP and has been on advisory missions and assignments in Bangladesh, Indonesia, The Gambia , the Phillipines and Vietnam. He has published 14 books and over six dozen research papers in reputed journals. Books authored and edited by him include Locational Diversification of Industries, Rural Industrialisation, Wage Structure and Labour Mobility in a Local Labour Market, Informal Sector in a Developing Economy, Gender and Employment in India and Growth, Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Resource Management in the Mountain Areas of South Asia.
